Stove King

Bass guitar, backing vocals.

Stove King, born Andrew John King on October 31, 1969, in Liverpool, England, was Mansun’s bassist from 1995 to 2002, providing the band’s rhythmic foundation during their rise in the Britpop era. Meeting Paul Draper in the early 1990s while working as photo retouchers in rival printing firms near Chester, King bonded with him over shared loves of David Bowie, Duran Duran, and ABC. A relative newcomer to bass, he joined Draper’s vision for Mansun, initially rehearsing in Liverpool studios with a drum machine. As the band’s “quiet anchor,” he managed early promotion, including the Mansun ansaphone service for fans.

Post-Mansun, King exited the music industry entirely, pursuing a career in speedway racing and focusing on family life in the UK. He has avoided reunions, with Draper noting in 2008 that King showed no interest, and has kept a reclusive profile, occasionally rumored in non-music roles. King’s contributions grounded Mansun’s experimental edge, earning respect for his reliability amid the band’s internal turmoil.
